So today I read review of this weird but interesting thing and watched few stories and I must say I am impressed by few things.
What SID is?
Well SID appears to be a “game” and an editor that allows you to make one screen scenes with interactive objects out of large library of content and probably add your own. So using those you can create a story. And you are master of that story. Then another person can connect to you trough internet and become a player in your story. After that what seems to take a place is theatrical improvisation in which player tries to act trough story and master makes adjustments and leads player trough the story. Then in the end SID generated series of PNGs and PHP files which allow to put your result to the internet and watch as a comic or something. May sound confusing but here are few examples.
Probably after checking those it makes a lot more of sense
Is it a game?
Well that depends on your definition. It seems to lack most of important core elements of games like proper rules and aims without which it is hard forp layers to find common ground to play a game. But there are some rules of how to have fun with it and as I mentioned at its core it is a something similar to theatrical improvisation. Sooo for having some fun in it you should have some sense of how to act and improvise to make an unfolding story master made unfold in interesting way. So you kind of follow the flow master made resisting not more then you need. In a way master and player come in terms to some abstract rules of how story should go to its end(which is an aim). It just that those rules and aims are very abstract and hard to put in words but they are there and that’s is part of fun. Kind of a communication of player and master trough such interesting medium.
How it was recived
It seems that game beta/demo or something started to ship on 9 of April which makes it little bit more then a week. What amazes me is that communities like this one quickly appeared to solve some things. This one allows to post stories and allows sorting them by visits and rating. Also it has discussions and tries to solves matchmaking (finding masters and players) to some extent. It was only a week but they already have few hundreds stories there and I enjoined some of them. Knowing they were made in an improvisation makes it even more interesting.
It actually little bit amazes me that it was well received so far. No I don’t mean I dislike it or anything, on contrary. But now thinking about it I realize that it is nothing new and it just that my thoughts were occupied with different things lately. There were and are things like RPG Maker, Warcraft 3 map making and of-course I played things like D&D a lot back in a day and like such stuff but it was time consuming, hard and needed a lot of imagination often. SID makes it little bit simpler but still probably not easy… I wonder how much success it will gain and how much chance such interesting things have of gaining a large audience. This kind of games that inspire a creative thinking in players is something I watch forward to but it is sad to see a AAA industry and big Facebook developers coming the other way simplifying stuff.
Have I played it?
Not yet. Hmm with time I may consider trying the role of a player… Role of a master like with D&D may be too consuming and not that rewarding for me.
